The state of Jammu and Kashmir is not only a paradise for the tourists and the travelers but also a heaven for the food lovers. The state has a unique cuisine somewhat different form the northern Indian cuisines. If non-vegetarian food dominates the Jammu and Kashmir region then on the other side in the Ladakh region, where the majority of the population are the peace loving Buddhist people the vegetarian diet prevails. The staple food however in the entire region is rice. The grandeur in the food comes to the sight when it comes to the festivals in the state. The Kashmiri half uses lots of the spices in its delicacies where as the Ladhaki people prefer the steamed and the boiled type of the food.

The non vegetarian cuisines

Coming to the non vegetarian food in the state we have got a huge list of the preparations from the meat. Here in the province of Jammu and Kashmir almost every second day the people include the meat in their diet. During the grand feast of Wazan a total of about 30 different non- vegetarian dishes are prepared. The chefs who cook the delicacies are called the Wazas who are the famed chefs from across the region and have inherited the great styles and the secrets of cooking from their ancestors who at one time were the proud chefs of the Wazan. During this time there is a lot of experimentation with the food and one can find during this time a variety of the same food and mind it that every variant tastes better than the original one.

The Rista or the meatballs that are smashed to tiny pieces and then rolled and cooked in the gravy are the main highlight of the Wazan. On the other side are the seikh kabaabs, the tabak maz ate another mouth watering crispy bites for the foodies. Apart from these the dishes served here are the Rogan josh; which is a lamb meat cooked in gravy, yakhni; lamb cooked in gravy with curd, goshtaba, Syoon Olav etc. and the list is still delicious as it goes on and on.

The vegetarian cuisine

The non vegetarian side however is not much diversified as the non-vegetarian dishes but one can find a few non vegetarian dishes that can be considered a distinguishing cuisine that marks the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The famous of them is the Dum Aloo; which is a steamed bowl of potatoes cooked with spices, the Lyodoor Tschaman, a Cottage Cheese which is  cooked in creamy turmeric based gravy and is popular not only in Kashmir but throughout the country, the Raazma-Gogji etc.

In Ladakh there is a lot in the vegetarian dishes. The famous thing here is the salty butter tea and the other famous dish is the Tsampa which is roasted ground barley flour,Tsampa, Pava,Khambir, steamed momos etc.

In the sweet dishes from the Kashmir region are the famous Fireen, the snacks as the Sheermal and Baqerkhani keep the taste affair going on.

When it comes to food the Kashmir cuisines are a pride on the Indian menu table that serves real gourmet stuff to your food table.

Ladakh Bike Tour-It Is Really Physical

The rugged terrains of Ladakh have attracted many travelers, trekkers and the challengers of the world’s toughest roads here, the reward being the beauty of the nature that pierces through the eyes and hits the soul. The virgin beauty of the place has attracted not just travelers but from the starting of the months of May every year the place becomes a paradise for the motorcyclists. The bullet and the Enfield bikes start to rattle the calmness here. But visiting Ladakh is not just a matter of plan and set out but the physical challenges have to taken care this time rather more seriously than the packing, for a bike tour to this part of the world.

One should be very careful in having a thorough check up of oneself before setting out to Ladakh as most of the people are bound to suffer from the acute mountain sickness due to high altitude and thin air, nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, and several other uncommon problems regarding the health.  Hence one needs a prior accustoming of one’s body to the change in the environment. One has to take up certain exercises so that the lungs and the muscles adapt to the upcoming challenges.

Due to the higher altitude the air becomes thin and hence the oxygen content of the air is less at such altitudes. When less oxygen reaches the lungs the blood stream doesn’t get enough oxygen to carry to the heart and hence breathing becomes harder and also one tends to feel dizzy and drowsy.

There are many exercises that help to increase the lung capacity so that more oxygen is taken in. some of these include the blowing of the balloons continuously for certain periods in the day. Aerobic games such as swimming, cycling, playing football and running can help a lot in increasing your stamina. Rhythmic breathing exercises can help a lot before setting out to the tour and also in the tour itself.

Apart from the breathing problems that hit the nervous system there are other problems that one may also face as the nose bleeding and fatigue due to continuous biking so one must be ready to face the hurdles and the body must be tamed and proper medicines must be taken under the guidance of good doctors prior to the trip. However the medicines as the Diamox are used to cure the mountain sickness but side effects such as skin infections and drowsiness may be visible and may not suit everyone hence these drugs too must be taken under proper guidance of the physician. But if one is a regular user of the Diamox then it’s a good idea to go for the blood tests whenever possible in the tour.

The foreigners (protected areas) order 1958 refrains non-Indian citizens from visiting certain areas in Kashmir along with some other states in the country, without a PAP (protected area permit). The permit may be obtained by fullfilling certain criteria. Even Indian citizens who do not reside in those locations need to produce a ILP(inner lie permit) to enter those places. Compared to the issue of PAP, the issue of ILP is a less complicated process and requires less time. Even NRI’s who have been residing outside of India for more than 6 months or PIO or OCI card holders are not eligible for ILP. They have to obtain a PAP like other foreigners.

The reason behind this act is purely security issues. Most of these places are situated in very remote and not easily accessible parts of the state. But people still want to visit these places near Jammu even the pain of going through a complicated and time consuming process of obtaining a PAP does not prevent the foreigners or NRI’s or OCI card holders or PIO card holders from visiting these places. The reason behind this is the ethereal scenic and natural beauty of these locations.

Tourism Minister, Ghulam Ahamad Mir said, that the government of Jammu and Kashmir has submitted a meticulous project of US$25.3 million (INR150 crore) to the Centre to promote tourism in all three regions of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh.

The state government was also planning to restore the existing monasteries in the region, appoint landscaping experts, establish tourism centres as well as provide basic road transportation in the region.
Ahmad Mir also said, “The government has put forward the detailed project report of the plans to the Centre that we want to implement in Ladakh to assist tourism circuit in three regions, Jammu, Kashmir andLadakh.”

The tourism of this place offers you the prospect to trek in a cold desert, snuggled in the arid region of Himalayas with wide river valleys on whose fertile soil vegetation and villages have sprung up with its ancient culture. Ladakh is considered as the most important place for the Buddhist religion. There are a number of important monasteries located in this region. Several tour packages will take you to Alchi monastery which is located in the remote corner of Ladakh, which is a home to rare manuscripts and ancient painting culture. At present, Alchi monastery is probably the most significant Buddhist site in Ladakh.

The tour generally ends in a parking area where souvenir shops are located and there is also a centuries old tree, which is considered to be a sacred tree. As for the myth of the local inhabitants of Ladakh, the tree has grown from the walking stick of Lotsava Rinchen Zango. He was the translator of many Indian Buddhist texts into Tibetan and founded Alchi Gompa in 10th century.
Alchi Gompa is surrounded by a wall with small prayer wheels. Rinchen Zango, the fonder this monastery, brought sculptors and wood carvers from Kashmir in order to work on the establishment of Alchi Gompa. The wall paintings of this holy monument are some of the oldest surviving paintings in Ladakh which are painted with semi precious stones. These paintings are considered to be one of the exquisite and most well-known examples of Buddhist art in Ladakh.

Another significant monastery of Ladakh is Thiksey monastery, which is at times referred as “Mini Potala” because of its resemblance to the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet. This monastery is the largest one in central Ladakh. This monastery is a 12 stored monument which houses many items of Buddhist art such as stupas, statues, thangkas, wall paintings and swords. The floors of this monastery is arranged in an ascending order of significance and are well spaced, from the ground of the monastery, the dwelling units to the top of the hill enshrining the potang (official residence) of the chief Lama.

The best time to visit Ladakh is during the month of June, during which Hemis Festival is held. It is the period when the entire local people of Ladakh come together to celebrate the rare festivities. During the festival time you will find many things to amuse yourself, from the archery competitions to polo and open air parties with dance and songs. Shops are also filled with amusing traditional handicrafts which will provide you to buy some exclusive items of your interest. A tour to Ladakh is full of surprises as the valley offers you much more than your expectation.

All over India, several tourist destinations are experiencing a fall in visitors. The chief reason to this decline is the floods and landslides caused by the monsoon rains in June. One of the places which have not been less affected by the depression is Kashmir. Kashmir has been witnessing greater amount of rush than the previous years in the current summer season, which is around 10 percent.

Ghulam Ahmad Mir, the state’s tourism minister, stated in Khabar South Asia, “This time we are witnessing a good number of visitors. Compared to previous year, more tourists have already visited Kashmir in the past two months. At Srinagar’s Sheik-ul-Alam International Airport, tourist arrivals are up significantly”.

He also noted, “We are doing our best to make their stay relaxing and secure. Even during curfews this year, authorities helped tourists by providing all kinds of help”.
For hoteliers and tour administrators in Kashmir are satisfied to some extend with the current summer season.

Niyaz Ahmad, a hotel owner near the famous Dal Lake, told Khabar, “Regardless of some odd incidents in the valley and the recent Uttarakhand (floods) tragedy, my hotel is completely booked. Last year this month, there were not many visitors here”.Ishtiyaq Ahmad, who owns a travel agency in Srinagar, said, “At present, we are witnessing a rush of visitors and we are doing good business”.

Satisfied Visitors

The local and the foreign tourists are enjoying the unspoiled beauty of Kashmir.Marie James, 48, a Dutch nationalist, while walking on the shores of Dal Lake with her son, said, “This is my first trip to Kashmir and we are thoroughly enjoying it. The locals are also nice and co-operative”. She happily exclaimed, “I have been in many tourist destinations, but this is indeed a heaven on earth”.

Another satisfied visitor was Kapil Kumar, 36, from Gujarat, who arrived in Srinagar last week with his wife for their honeymoon, told Khabar that the circumstances in the Valley has changed for the betterment of the place.
He also added, “I come every year and I have found it a much safer place. Last week, I got married and I chose Kashmir for my Honeymoon, rather than any foreign destination”.

Tourist Festival
Starting the season, state organizations in May staged a chief tourism festival, which was a part of their efforts to recover losses that Kashmir has suffered in about last 20 years due to violence in the region.
The first ever Kashmir Tourist Festival in Srinagar attracted both domestic and foreign tourists who were eager to experience its extraordinary landscape, traditions and cuisines.

Mohammad Hussain Mir, a senior official in the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department said, “We organised musical programmes, set up various stalls of Kashmir products that depicted our rich culture, also held activities like trekking expedition, photography competition and sporting events”.
Mir stated, “This festival has not only helped to attract more tourists to Kashmir but has also built confidence among outsiders that Kashmir is safe like other parts of India”. He also added, “The fading violence gave us confidence to organise such a big event across the state”.

The two week spectacle which was held from May 14th to 29th has proved to be a chief success towards promoting the economy and creating new opportunities for the local people.
Shahid Khan, who is from south Kashmir’s Pahalagam town, transported tourists around the region on horses. He said, “As there was a huge rush of tourists during the festival, I hired several people for ferrying the tourists to the local sightseeing places”. He also added, “The festival gave an opportunity to earn good money for many of the poor inhabitants, who work as labourers and normally earn less”.

India is a country where women are worshipped as Goddesses, but in recent time, it has seen some adversity and to believe this fact, we need to rewind the history. Being a woman and travelling alone in India is bit unsecure and one has to undergo a lot of trouble. Murders, rapes and eve teasing of women happen on trains and buses while travelling along. In such situation, women have to take extra care and have to keep the presence of mind to recognize what the things are going in and around them.

Travelling in India alone for women can be prodigious task. You cannot escape from the wandering eyes of some men, who get some brutal kick out for staring at a lecherous manner at women. We live in a country where social conservatism is still prevalent and due to the social conservatism, women should be educated on how they handle themselves in public. It is very important that they learn some of the tips to be safe while travelling alone in India.

Watch What You Wear

It is very important that you restrict yourself from wearing skin tight cloths and short skirts. These short of dresses attract unwanted attention from others. Go for simple clothes like salwar with a dupatta/shawl. You can also wear jeans and kurta but don’t forget to carry a shawl with you.

Do not indulge in conversation with strangers

Women are also social being and they also love to know about different things that come across while travelling. We can understand that you love to be socializing, but avoid this while travelling all alone. Keep to yourself and try not to make conservation with other and if someone does manage to bother you and try to get into conservation, keep it to least and do not give any personal information about yourself.

Keep an Eye on Your Belongings

In India this proverb is quite familier, when it comes to handling of luggage. Elders often make youngsters aware about how to handle their belongings while out for travel to new places and they often repeat this proverb “Aankh Baand Dibba Gayab”. This is India my dear! Things usually disappear before you manage a “Namaste”. You need to keep eye on your belongings and be vigilant all the time.

Love your wallet Keep your wallet very close to you at all times. Also, keep money in different pockets and bags. If in case there is unfortunate incident, you will still have some money with you to handle the situation.

Boost Your Confident

Don’t make anyone feel that you are travelling to any particular place for the first time. Be confident and act like you know what are you doing and where are you going. Don’t low your head or dim your voice.

Do not borrow anything from anyone

While travelling, don’t accept or give anything to anyone. If any strangers gives you fruits or biscuits, politely decline and enjoy staying at your seat. If you are near the railway station and watching the ads that runs constantly spreading awareness to the passenger what not to do while travelling in a train. Hope you understand what I mean.

Do Stay in Corner Be in a Group Where Women are there

When you feel that you are in the corner of the train or bust with a man, leave that place and be there where women are around. If you feel uncomfortable with the person sitting next to you, please ask for seat change or negotiate with other passangers for seat change.

Travel light the Real Mantra

Always travel light as you are travel all alone. You not only have to manage these bags and luggages, but you also have to take care of yourself. Don’t carry lots of liquid money or jewellery.
